AI Search · 3 min

Search became an answer. You need to be in it.

Winning search used to mean earning a link someone clicked. That model is being replaced, and most local businesses haven't noticed.

Ask ChatGPT who the best roofer in your city is and you get a name, not ten links. The answer is the result.

69% of Google searches now end without a click, up from 56% a year earlier.

Fewer visitors, better ones

The instinct is to read that as catastrophic. Seer Interactive found visitors arriving from ChatGPT converted at 15.9% versus 1.76% from traditional organic search. The AI already did the filtering, so whoever clicks through has been handed a recommendation and is acting on it.

Which changes the question. It's no longer "how do I rank third instead of eighth." It's: when the assistant names one business, is it mine?

What actually earns a citation

Statistics beat adjectives. The first systematic study of this, from Princeton, Georgia Tech and IIT Delhi, found that adding relevant statistics to content improved visibility in AI answers by roughly 41%. Keyword stuffing did essentially nothing. A model assembling an answer needs quotable material — "exceptional service" is unquotable, "43-minute average response across 1,200 calls" is not.

Mentions beat backlinks. Ahrefs found brand mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.664; backlinks at 0.218. Being talked about matters more than being linked to. Muck Rack found roughly 82% of AI citations come from earned media rather than a brand's own site.

Consistency is accuracy. If your name, services and hours differ across four directories, the model has four versions of you and low confidence in all of them. Low confidence means it recommends someone else.

Five moves for a local business

  1. Baseline it. Run the ten prompts a real customer would use through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews. Write down who gets named.
  2. State your facts plainly on your own site — services, area, hours, credentials — with structured data.
  3. Publish something quotable. Real numbers from your own operation. Highest-leverage change available.
  4. Build earned mentions. Chambers, trade associations, suppliers, local press, community forums.
  5. Feed the review corpus. Assistants read review text. Reviews naming specific services and neighborhoods teach the model what you do.

GEO is young and the tools are immature. Anyone guaranteeing you a position inside ChatGPT is selling something they can't deliver. But the direction isn't in doubt.
